القصة باختصار تدور حول هذان الشخصان، مارتن هارت وراستن كول، محققان في لويزيانا في سنة 1995 يبدأن التحقيق في قضية مقتل فتاة بشكل غريب فتبدأ الأحداث معهم بالتتالي لتصبح القصة أغرب فأغرب شيئاً فشيئاً، ولكن محور قصة التحقيق ليس كل شيء في المسلسل فالمسلسل تناول أيضاً حياة هذان الشخصان وغاص عميقاً جداً في تفاصيل كل شخصية من الشخصيات ليُبين لنا ماهيتها وما هو أسلوبها في الحياة، ثم حاول قدر الإمكان أن يوضح لنا الاختلافات بين الشخصيتان بين شخصية، تقطر غرابةً هي شخصية راستن وبين شخصية روتينية وعادية للغاية هي شخصية مارتن، ثم ذهب بعيداً المسلسل ليوضح لنا أنَّ الأمور لا تقاس بالشكل الخارجي فقط ولكن هنالك تفاصيل آخرى يجب توضيحها، كيف أنَّ كل امرءٍ ممكن أن يكون سيء من الداخل كيف ممكن أنَّ يكون فاسد من الداخل والشر يتملكه ربما كل هذا وأكثر في قصة المسلسل هذه التي نراها من منظور راستن ومارتن اللذان يرويانها لمحققان في عام 2012 وتبعات تلك القصة.
